Los Angeles Sheriff’s homicide detectives and the coroner were in the Angeles National Forest north of Glendora, where a hiker found the body Saturday.

The hiker that found the body contacted his girlfriend, who called the sheriff’s department, Gregory said.

Because the corpse was covered with mud and debris, however, the extrication was initially delayed, the news release said.

An investigation is underway to determine if the body is that of a hiker reported missing in the area.

Sheriffs had set up camp at the Bridge to Nowhere trailhead Sunday morning and were waiting for daylight to break to find the body.

No description of the person was available, and there was no initial information regarding how long the body may have been there.

The deceased man had not been identified as of Sunday evening, according to authorities.

Officials have not yet determined the identity of the man or the cause of his death.
