The photograph was taken by German-based Kerstin Langberger on Svarlbard, the Norwegian archipelago where polar bears are believed to be staving off the pressures of global warming which is impacting on other populations across the Arctic. Polar bears population has been suffering as a result of global warming. I see the summers being so pleasant and warm as never before.
He said the bear was more likely to be old, sick or hurt – not starving because of a lack of prey or ice.
“Climate change is happening big deal here in the Arctic”. Polar bears were seen trying to hunt reindeer, eating bird’s eggs, moss and seaweed. With the pack ice retreating additional and additional north yearly, they are typically caught on land the place there’s not a lot meals … And I realised that the fat bears are almost exclusively males which stay on the pack-ice all year long.
Langenberger wrote that it isn’t the first time she saw a scrawny polar bear desperately looking for food. The shocking image is a testament to the plight of the polar bears’ suffering. Properly, right here comes my query: how can inhabitants be secure if it consists of much less and fewer females and cubs?
The worldwide Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) now lists polar bears as “vulnerable” since their numbers have allegedly reduced by more than 30 percent in the last 45 years. “There was no research that I do know of that started extra bears starve particularly because of local weather change”, she added. Lack of food caused by shrinking sea ice may not be the only reason for such poor sights.Rode thinks that the bear in the photo may also be injured. Yes, I have seen bears in good shape – but I have also seen dead and starving polar bears.
Ian Stirling, an adjunct professor at the University of Alberta, told Mashable: “You have to be a little bit careful about drawing conclusions immediately”. Stirling noted that the bear appears to have an injury to one of its hind legs, which could have played a role in its weight loss. In all of my years of growing up in the Arctic and later, working as a biologist, I had never found a dead polar bear.
Sea ice is the home of polar bears’ major food source, ice seals, so when the sea ice disappears, so does the bears’ main way of getting meals. We did find two dead bears in this location and other groups found more dead bears.
Some researchers say that malnourished animals are a common sight in many populations. Through @sea_legacy and @natgeo we will continue to shine a light on our changing planet to convince the unconvinced.
She said everyone can do something to stop or slow down the effects of climate change.
Polar bears were indigenous to as far south as Minnesota upon settlement of North America but called the Yellow bear because it retained its summer coat longer but still the same bear and Canadian natives are allowed to hunt them and guide American hunters to kill polar bears and the biggest single population of polar bears is in Churchill Manitoba’s municipal dump.
