Cody Ledbetter, once the star quarterback for New Mexico State and later a disgraced high school football coach, was found dead in Aledo, Texas, on Saturday morning.
According to Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler, Ledbtter was found in a shed after an apparent suicide and pronounced dead at 9:26 a.m. ET Saturday.
Ledbetter in 2005 pleaded guilty to having an improper relationship with a female student at Alvarado High School, where he was an assistant coach.
In 2005, he was charged with having sex with a young victim and was given 10 years probation. However, he fled to Canada before he could be sentenced in the case.
In 2010, he surrendered to the Ottawa Police Service and was accused of assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats against his pregnant former girlfriend. He had to serve three years before he was eligible for parole, but prison records were not available on Sunday to determine how long he served before he was released.
But Ledbetter is to this day one of the best Quarterbacks to ever play in an Aggie uniform, for 1991-1995.
The Star-Telegram reported that Ledbetter ran into legal trouble in the years following his CFL career. He also played professionally with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.
