It’s been a quarter of a century since Ronald Reagan rode off into the California sunset, but the Republican Party has never stopped hankering for his heir. Naturally, the spirit of the Great Communicator was evoked again and again, with practically all of the candidates declaring him a personal inspiration.
ER: What you hear of him is that he was a really nice guy.
Perhaps some minority of people will vote for Trump because of his personality.
In the press filing center, there are 800 credentialed members of the media – far more than any other debate at the library. On immigration, his venomous nativism shown through. But on a host of issues, the loudmouth celebrity leading the pack parts ways with St. Ronnie – illuminating the less-than-conventional conservatism of both Republican figureheads. However, his name will no doubt be invoked repeatedly during tonight’s CNN debate (3:00pm Pacific for the undercard; 5:00pm for the main stage-look for these match ups). “The Fox debate [in Cleveland] was better handled and they had a bigger venue with a larger crowd”. And, he won the discussion about special interest money.
None of today’s contenders can approach the Great Communicator’s oratory skills, but that doesn’t excuse our hearing precious little from them that could even remotely qualify as inspiring. Last time, she was at the kiddie table.
“He felt very good about me”, Trump said. That moment, too, will be replayed over and over.
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker once said Reagan’s firing of striking air traffic controllers was “the most significant foreign policy decision” of his lifetime, because it sent a message to the rest of the world not to mess with the new USA president.
RR: Yes. Trump doesn’t seem to be able to help himself from making comments about women that are just-this latest thing with Fiornia, I mean, come on. At one point later, Trump even gave Carson a high-five.
She played pit bull much of the night. Ted Cruz, who propose ending birthright citizenship. I picture my father on a horse at the ranch, maybe cutting some wood in his old blue jeans.
Jeb Bush needed a good night and at the halfway mark I thought he was toast.
It was the only debate attendee with an extensive track record of presidential experience: From 1973 to until its decommissioning in 2001, SAM 27000 operated as the mobile Oval Office for seven presidents, from Nixon to George W. Bush. Bush also came across as the person he is, a deeply conservative establishment pol who is not a bombthrower. (No other nation has more than one).
By the time the questions got to Sen.
To the editor: The thing Republican primary voters have to ask themselves about Wednesday’s presidential debates is this: Did they learn anything new?
“Just on a human being kind of level, I can’t think of two people who are more diametrically opposed”, Ron Reagan told Politico”.
On this, it’s Donald Trump (and the people) vs. everyone else. But, someone forgot to tell him that this is not yet a general election.
Ohio governor John Kasich said he “actually flew on this plane with Reagan when I was a congressman”. In fact, the majority of the 2016 candidates for the Republican presidential nomination aren’t just against immigration (legal or otherwise), they’re yapping about repealing “birthright citizenship.” On the issue of climate change, he offered not a single solution whatsoever and this earned him applause. Many conservatives believe the two Bush presidencies that followed Reagan, as well as the subsequent GOP nominees, failed because they were not sufficiently faithful to the 40th president’s ideoogical road map. With Ronald Reagan our friends knew that we had their backs and our enemies feared us. Trump portrayed a swarm of illegal aliens and their criminal “gangs all over the place – Chicago, Baltimore, no matter where you look”. “And the other side of the coin is”. Neither man thought much of those claims, as it turns out.
