Former US Open semi-finalist Yanina Wickmayer produced a superb fightback to beat Poland’s Magda Linette 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and win the Japan Women’s Open on Sunday.
The seventh seed from Croatia looked to be on her way out of the Tokyo event as American Brengle cruised through the first set in just 26 minutes, but Tomljanovic reeled off the first three games in the second to get back on level terms.
But there was no rattling the 25-year-old, who broke for 1-0 and then 4-1 in the third set.
Sixth seeded Christina McHale, from the United States, remains the highest seeded player left in the draw and she is through to the semi-finals after scoring a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over China’s Zheng Saisai.
It was to prove decisive as the Belgian pulled away in the second set, breaking twice and saving the three break points she faced.
But Wickmayer the world number 86 has shown glimpses of the form that took her to the last four of the 2009 US Open semifinals this week as she chases a fourth career title.
The Belgian claimed a 4-6 6-3 6-3 victory over 23-year-old Pole Linette for her fourth title and first since January 2010.
