The Vermont Public Safety commissioner is ordering a review of training processes in the aftermath of the death of a state trooper who was trying out for the Tactical Services Unit.

The death certificate of Mr. Young, 28, was released Monday by the Vermont Health Department.

Young’s death has been ruled an accident.

Young, of Monkton, suffered a medical event causing him to collapse during training at the Ethan Allen Firing Range on September 17. The high Thursday was a near-record 86 degrees. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 2007 to 2011 and joined the Vermont State Police in January 2014. He was also a veteran of the Afghanistan-Iraqi war, his death certificate stated. He is survived by his children, a partner, parents and other family members.

An Essex Rescue ambulance, accompanied by 13 police cruisers, rushed Young from Jericho to the University of Vermont Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead about 3 p.m.

The state police did not respond to requests for comment. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church on West Main Street in Brownville.
