The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority formally adopted new regulations Wednesday that allow { car | bicycle }services such as Uber and Lyft – as well as limousines – to operate at the airports.
“For passengers at Reagan National and Dulles { international | worldwide }, this change means they will see a broader variety of ground transportation options quickly and readily available”, said Airports Authority Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Margaret McKeough.
The regulations create a designated waiting area so cars can get as close as possible to their passengers. More recently, the popular services have won victories, including at Los Angeles global Airport last month. However, new regulations at Dulles { international | worldwide }and Reagan National could shake up the landscape once again.
“What this does is artificially inflate the prices for an Uber ride”, says Taylor Bennett, an Uber spokesman. They’d also be required to pay a $4 fee every time they drop off or pick up a passenger, a cost that could be passed on to the passengers.
Officials at Uber and Lyft supported the proposal, but said the $4 fee is among the highest in the country. “We look forward to continuing to work with MWAA to revise the fee structure so that hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors don’t have to pay over twice the fee that’s imposed on taxi rides”.
