The Late Show With Stephen Colbert premiered Tuesday night with an impressive, ratings-topping 6.6 million viewers, but as Colbert informed his audience Wednesday, his inaugural episode came dangerously close to not airing at all because of a technical glitch.

Ahead of the show’s taping, approximately 150 Sanders supporters gathered across the street from the Ed Sullivan Theater in Midtown Manhattan to catch a glimpse of the presidential candidate, according to The Guardian’s Adam Gabbatt.

Sanders also explained to Colbert why he’s not insulted when people call him a “liberal” and a “socialist”.

On being compared to Donald Trump, Sanders said, “I think that what Trump is doing is appealing to the baser instincts among us: xenophobia and, frankly, racism”. You take people’s anger, and you turn it against them – you win votes on that. “As the oxygen drained my brain, and my organs started shutting down, I thought if we actually make it to air it would make an interesting story”, he said.

“You can be friends with people [with whom] you don’t agree with on everything”, the former Florida Gov. and Republican presidential aspirant told Colbert, who seemed to find his stride in the interview.

During the interview, Sanders touched on several of his signature issues, including income inequality, universal health care, campaign financing and education. “That’s where the big cash is these days”. Colbert quipped back, “That’s what every Democrat says”.

Of not having a super PAC, Sanders said he doesn’t, “because frankly I don’t support the agenda of corporate America or the billionaire class. I don’t want their money”. What I want, what we are doing – and I’m proud of this – we have over 450,000 people who have made individual contributions averaging $31.20 apiece.
