The deal will help Microsoft reach its goal of putting Windows 10 on 1 billion devices worldwide.

The unprecedented deal comes as Microsoft signs a raft of agreements with Chinese companies, from convincing local smartphone maker Xiaomi to adopt the company’s Azure cloud platform to a deal with the Sichuan Provincial Government to provide training, cloud computing knowledge, and incubation for local start-up companies.

“We’re excited to be working with leading hardware and software companies in China to develop ground-breaking devices and consumer experiences for Windows 10,” Microsoft wrote in a blog post on the deal.

This kind of visibility on China’s most popular search engine is Microsoft’s most recent attempt to boost sales there by making it easier to get legitimate copies of its newest operating system.

Windows 10 has the advantage over previous attempts by software vendors to support the switch from Google to other search engines.

On Wednesday, China Electronics Technology Group (CETC) and Microsoft Corp. announced a partnership aimed at providing world-class operating system technology and services for Chinese users in specialized fields in government institutions and critical infrastructure state-owned enterprises. Microsoft will make it easy for customers to upgrade to the official Windows 10 via a Baidu “Windows 10 Express” distribution channel.

Recently, tech companies have been taking major action to gain a foothold in the ripe market that is China, from Apple’s public apology to Google’s rumored censorship. Microsoft says that although it will no longer be offered as the default option in Windows 10 in China, users can still enable it if they want.

There are over 10 million devices now running the Windows 10 OS in the country, Microsoft reports. The search engine is used by less than 2 percent of internet users in China.

In addition, Baidu plans to offer Universal Windows applications for search, video, cloud and maps for Windows 10.
