It’s not yet clear which apps will be available with Android Pay support at launch, but Google said it’s been partnering with top payments processors (like Braintree, CyberSource, First Data, Stripe, and Vantiv) to make integration easy for developers. And it works at any tap and pay location across the US (over one million and growing).



Google today unexpectedly released a new Google Wallet app on the Play Store. Android Pay works on all Android phones with Near Field Communication (NFC) chips that run at least Android Kitkat 4.4. The payment card is not stored on the Sim or a secure elements, so the payment networks Mastercard and Visa provide an extra layer of security for the service.

This service is available in the United States for anyone who has a Wallet Balance, bank account, or a debit card. According to Dave Burke, Google engineering vice president, Android Pay would be accessible over 700,000 U.S. retail outlets accepting contactless payments. The current Google Wallet app will be incarnated into the Android Pay app in a short time while users new to the service can download the app from Google Play Store in a few days. The application will come set up on new and suitable mobile phones from T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon, all Softcard associates. And if you do, they will still be able to be used in Android Pay, for now.

We caught up with Greg Sterling, vice president of strategy and insights at the Local Search Association, to get his thoughts on Google’s revamped mobile payments system.

Like Apple Pay, Android Pay will let people tap and pay with their phones at stores that have a certain type of checkout equipment including a technology known as NFC.

Google has just published its latest official figures charting Android device characteristics including OS versions and screen sizes. Google says that Citi and Wells Fargo will be added in the coming days and that Capital One is “coming soon”.
