The atmosphere of New York’s Flushing Meadows, and the giant Arthur Ashe court, is incomparable.

Neither could 27th-seeded Jeremy Chardy.

Marin Cilic has finally dropped a set at the U.S. Open after winning 16 in a row.

Frenchman Jeremy Chardy provided the upset of the day dispatching seventh seeded Spaniard David Ferrer 7-6(6) 4-6 6-3 6-1 and was joined at the exit by Canadian 10th seed Milos Raonic who was beat 6-2 7-6(4) 6-3 by Spain’s Feliciano Lopez. Despite having two break point chances in the set Chardy was unable to convert them, and although the 27th seed was serving better he was not able to hold the vital service game, giving the defending champion the first 6-3. Cilic attacked the Frenchman’s second serve and was rewarded. Tournament officials announced Sunday that she had a concussion and would not play. This will be the sixth time these two meet on hard court. “I was aware of the fact that it was annoying, also, (to) opponents”, Djokovic said Friday after his third-round victory at the U.S. Open.

The No. 9 seed this year, Cilic hit 52 winners and 23 aces in the win. But his match against Djokovic is unlikely to be long. Cilic had re-discovered his first serve as 70% landed in and scoring 88% of points behind the serve. Tsonga figures to be fresher in the quarterfinals: He hasn’t lost a set or spent more than two and a quarter hours on court in any match. Cilic was on an injury scare in the second set when he rolled his right ankle.

He told Brad Gilbert courtside: “The first couple of games after that [ankle injury] were not easy, I was conscious of it. But after that I didn’t have any trouble at all”.

“I’m really pleased to have won a match against someone who’s had a great summer”, Venus said.

The explosive Tsonga can pose problems for anyone when he’s landing his ferocious flat serve.

Serena Williams has again rallied from a set down to win during her pursuit of the first Grand Slam since 1988.

“I have the feeling that I am playing my best tennis and I hope this will continue”, said Tsonga, who made the quarter-finals four years ago. Cilic has beaten Tsonga the last three matches, as Tsonga’s last win over Cilic came in the 2011 Cincinnati Masters. It was very tough. I didn’t lose too much energy here today.

If he does, Cilic won’t be playing in the shadows anymore.
