“When you have that many penalties, it’s on the head coach”.

“It’s pretty much a butt kicking if we call it for what it is”. Of course, the Golden Hurricane aren’t feeling all that respected themselves after being picked to finish last in the American Athletic Conference. With the team off to a good start, many wonder if this is the beginning of Tulsa’s up rise.

“We competed on defense, again, it was really hard to stop them”, Davie said.

Leading up to Saturday’s game against Tulsa, New Mexico football coach Bob Davie talked repeatedly about the importance of the outcome. “We thought we could out work, out hit and out discipline and we didn’t do it. They come in here and honestly, out disciplined us”.

New Mexico Outlook: The New Mexico Lobos are coming off of a dominant 66-0 win over FCS foe Mississippi Valley State in the season and home opener.

The Hurricane moved to 2-0 for the first time since September 12, 2009, when the team defeated New Mexico 44-10 in Albuquerque, and won on the road for the first time since a 24-14 victory at Louisiana Tech on November 23, 2013. On Friday at 8 p.m.at Sun Devil Stadium, the Lobos will battle Arizona State University (1-1).

“It’s the second game of the year”, he said. The Lobos did gain 390 total yards of offense, but most of that came in their first couple of drives that produced 179 yards. “Obviously, it was an opportunity that we didn’t take advantage of because Tulsa beat us”, Davie said. Dammon Gamblin grabbed a game-high eight passes for 131 yards.

Down 33-21 in the fourth quarter, the Lobos appeared to get a diving, 29-yard touchdown catch from Carlos Wiggins of a Jordan pass. But an illegal-motion penalty wiped out the play, and Jordan threw an interception on the next play. “We have to go earn it”, Montgomery told reporters.

The defense, down key starters Craig Suits at linebacker and Jeremy Smith at defensive end, benefited by adjustments after being punched in the mouth on the first series, then forced a three-and-out, the first of five in the first half and six in the game. “They just stuffed us”.

New Mexico’s Terivon Gipson, whose status entering the game was questionable while recovering from meniscus surgery, finished with 71 yards rushing and two touchdowns. By using multiple offensive weapons, and taking some of the pressure off of Zack Langer, Keyarris Garrett, and Lucas, Tulsa’s offense looked more developed than it did in Game 1 vs. FAU. “Lobos beat Lobos tonight”.

Meanwhile, the big-play Tulsa passing game was exactly that.

The UNM defense did not crumble, though, forcing two punts and twice making the Golden Hurricane settle for field goals.

The Hurricane offense relied on career days from running back D’Angelo Brewer, who had 20 carries for 133 yards and a touchdown, and wide receiver Josh Atkinson, who caught three passes for 119 yards and a touchdown.

Last week, Tulsa survived its season opener, winning an overtime thriller against Florida Atlantic.
