SCOTTISH Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie has attacked the SNP as an “illiberal, centralising, arrogant and increasingly incompetent” government in a speech at his party’s annual United Kingdom conference.
Mr Cameron has ruled out a second Scottish independence vote, saying all sides had agreed to respect last year’s result and it was “time to move on”.
The SNP First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said proposals for another referendum will be in the party’s manifesto for the 2016 Holyrood elections.
“Independence won’t happen just because its supporters become more impatient for change”.
Ms Sturgeon said the SNP’s rise was being driven by the government’s failure to deliver on a promise of more powers for Scotland as well as pushing ahead with austerity and renewing Britain’s nuclear weapons arsenal despite opposition in Scotland, where it is based.
Many of those who backed her party in May did not support independence but believed that having SNP lawmakers in Westminster was the best way to make sure Scotland’s voice was heard.
The SNP administration says it will campaign in favour of remaining within the European Union and has warned against Scotland being “dragged out of Europe against its will”.
Shortly after she spoke, about 300 Yes campaigners marched on the Scottish Parliament.
“I’m pretty certain that there will be another referendum”, he said.
Rising star Mhairi Black, who defeated Labour veteran Douglas Alexander to become MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire South in May, will run the youth campaign. Opponents have highlighted declining literacy rates in schools, missed targets in the NHS and the Police Scotland shambles as evidence the Nationalists have neglected running the country due to their obsession with the constitution.
“The SNP want the lights to be turned off on scrutiny of their domestic record”. “So now it is time to move on”.
One year on from the September 18 ballot, and with the Scottish elections just eight months away, Ms Sturgeon will say that ” people will inevitably ask about the possibility of another referendum”. “We must take the energy and enthusiasm of the referendum and use it to transform the lives of families in Scotland”.
