But we all like to be frightened sometimes, don’t we? A prank is played on two of them, setting the stage for their untimely deaths. But isn’t that the same way you felt watching “Friday the 13th”? That’s a somewhat legitimate concern from Sony’s point of view, as Until Dawn’s story-heavy and action-light gameplay make it the kind of game many people might want to watch online rather than shelling out money to actually play. At any time, you can check the Butterfly Effect screen to see what decisions caused what outcomes. It’s the theory that the seemingly smallest change can result in huge variation later on. Whenever something happens in the game, the buttons you will need to push appear.

Throughout the game you can play up to eight characters, but if you get one of those characters killed, that’s it, their story is over – there are no respawns, and no checkpoints you can revert to. As a writer, you often imagine various different pathways your stories and characters could take but the variants vanish as soon as you pick one.

The graphics look unbelievable, as do the characters, and the background is very detailed. Also, I screamed at virtually every one of them.

But on the subject of hunting for clues, we reach one flaw in the game; player movement. But in a video game, where you control the pace, the scares can occasionally make you jump. It’s a gripe that does pass, but it’s annoying nonetheless.

Sony immediately responded and assured gamers that they were already aware of the issue and are trying to fix it. “Our store team is now investigating the issue”. You too can revel in mediocrity by following him on Twitter.

Your job – at least if you choose to do so – is to get all eight of the main characters through their getaway, basically surviving until dawn. That character is The Analyst: Dr Hill, who is played brilliantly by Peter Stormore.

That drama opens in “I Know What You Did Last Summer” fashion, with a flashback that has 10 teenagers on a winter holiday. These will play a part in how the story unfolds too. Every decision you make in your terrifying search for answers could mean the difference between life and death, but for whom? The animations are also very convincingly real but come across as stiff at times, taking away some of the suspension of disbelief.

Those decisions are what makes Until Dawn a unique prospect. In other words, it does just what a horror game should. “You’ve gotta get the squirrel just to prove your manhood”, he cackles down the phone. Even if you won’t be replaying it for the best possible ending, its spiraling world of cinematic horror and technical prowess deserve to be witnessed a few times.

And that tells you everything.

Until Dawn takes place in the remote wilderness of Western Canada where players will control ten friends- Sam (Hayden Panettiere), Mike, (Brett Dalton), Chris (Noah Fleiss), Matt (Jordan Fisher), Ashley (Galdriel Stineman), Jessica (Meaghan Martin), Emily (Nichole Bloom), Josh (Rami Malek), and his twin sisters Hannah and Beth – as they spend their weekend at Blackwood Mountain Ski Lodge for their annual winter getaway.
