Slovenia is prepared to accept up to 10,000 refugees if such a need arises, the country’s ambassador to Germany said Saturday.

While the Croatian police first tried to prevent them from proceeding towards Slovenia, it soon let them go on. Hungary condemned the incident, calling it a “major violation of worldwide law” on Saturday, the Independent reported. However, Croatia said there had been no arrests. But they have little choice after Hungary sealed off its southern border with Serbia on Tuesday and began arresting anyone caught trying to enter the country illegally.

The Slovenian authorities on Friday registered over 1,000 refugees that had entered the country while more than 700 were still at the Obrezje border crossing, 20 kilometres (13 miles) east of Croatian capital Zagreb, waiting to be allowed in. “We forced them, by sending people up there”. Prime Minister Viktor Orban has also said that by keeping out Muslims, Hungarian police are defending “Europe’s Christian culture”. The police in turn used a tear gas.

After more than an hour of tension, riot police used tear gas to stop migrants, some with children.

Slovenia will discuss the possibility of a “corridor” for refugees and migrants to pass through the country if the pressure from an immminent influx becomes too great, Prime Minister Miro Cerar has said.

The European Council is set to hold emergency talks on the crisis next week to push through a binding refugee quota for each nation, but several countries have lashed out against the plan.
