A drunk-driving New Jersey cop has turned himself in after driving the wrong way on a Staten Island highway, killing another officer and his friend. He has said his client is still recovering from serious leg injuries. I mean what would you expect?
Abad will also surrender his passport, his lawyer, Mario Gallucci told the judge.
“Right now he has very little use of his lower extremities, he has very little use of his left arm, and he has some speech deficit”, Gallucci said.
Abad was charged in a 27-count indictment with vehicular manslaughter, aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault and other crimes.
Abad was off-duty March 20 when he went the wrong way and crashed head-on into a tractor-trailer, killing a fellow Linden officer, Frank Viggiano, and a civilian, Joseph Rodriguez. He had departed from Curves, a nearby strip club in Charleston, according to authorities, and used the Arthur Kill Road exit to drive onto the wrong side of the expressway, authorities said.
Family members and fellow Linden police officers were at the hearing in court on Monday, where the judge issued a $25,000 bond for Abad, He posted it and was allowed to travel back home.
The Richmond County District Attorney’s Office has confirmed that Abad’s blood-alcohol level was.24 percent, three time the legal limit of.08, following the accident. “This wasn’t fun and games, he’s upset. He’s upset, he’s lost two friends and hurt another”. Abad has been on the Linden police force for six years and has reportedly had his license suspended because of a previous drunk driving incident. If convicted on the top count, aggravated vehicular homicide, he faces up to 8 1/3 and 25 years in prison. The Roselle charge was later dropped because Abad’s attorney failed to receive evidence, but Abad pleaded guilty in the Rahway case, where he was caught on a police dashcam failing a sobriety test.
