McDonald’s isn’t famous for serving up healthy diet options, but selected outlets in Germany will be offering organic hamburgers on a trial basis from October this year.
Thanks to an a couple of new menu items that will soon be offered at 1,500 of the fast-food giant’s restaurants in Germany, it seems we’re about to find out.
It’s not the first time a chain has dabbled in all-natural beef, nor is any of it coming to America, but, nevertheless, next week McDonald’s Germany is debuting the company’s first entirely antibiotic-free, humanely raised burger.
The “McB” combines an organic meat patty with Lollo Bionda lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, red onion rings, Edam cheese, various sauces and a dark bread.
In Germany, beef certified as “organic” must come from cattle that eat organically grown feed and graze on pasture where synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides are not used.
The ingredients for the organic hamburgers will reportedly be sourced from various organic farms in Germany and Austria and will initially be offered in two variations, with consumers being asked to then vote for their favorite.
Meanwhile, along with the organic meat, as well as tomatoes, red onions, and some sort of spicy sauce, the Long McB will get extra fancy: The burger will also be garnished with arugula and a sunflower seed-not sesame seed-bun. Its menu now includes salads, wraps, and an option to add apples to its popular children’s Happy Meal. In the U.S.it has sourced only grass-fed beef since 2010; previous year it pledged to begin buying at least some verified sustainable beef (raised through socially and environmentally responsible practices) by 2016.
