A University of Colorado-Denver economist who has studied how marijuana availability impacts alcohol consumption said the Colorado numbers don’t show much.
Dispensaries in El Paso County say business is booming because of it.
For the first time in history, a state has generated more annual revenue from taxes imposed on marijuana than from taxes imposed on alcohol.
Pot users, growers and sellers in Colorado are definitely rejoicing after the state declared a Tax-free Weed Day on Wednesday.
Colorado tracks marijuana sales but doesn’t make the data public, making it impossible to know if Wednesday set a single-day sales record. The state had a tax holiday for marijuana on Wednesday, an event that was welcomed by consumers and producers alike. Based on the figures released by the Colorado Department of Revenue, $70 million was brought from marijuana taxes compared to less than $42 million from alcohol taxes, over the course of the year. The Taxpayers Bill of Rights dictates that tax collections can’t exceed the projections from the year before. Aurora will still charge its regular 5-percent city tax on weed despite the state markdowns, according to Robin Peterson, manager of the city’s Marijuana Enforcement Division.
In 2013, a year after legalizing recreational pot, voters approved the 25 percent in state taxes. Washington state followed suit in July that same year.
The president of the Colorado Cannabis Chamber of Commerce, Tyler Henson, told the Denver Post that pot shops have been “setting up, doing their advertisements and telling their customers to come on down for special deals”. A permanent decrease in the sales tax of marijuana to 8% is set to take effect in 2017 in order to more accurately represent a “fair tax” and to help control black market sales by minimizing the discrepancy of legal prices to street sales.
An accounting error in 2014’s total tax collections automatically triggered the suspension of the majority of taxes on recreational cannabis, Sky News reports. Instead of sending out refund checks, the state is holding the tax holiday.
