The new e-filing system, enabled last month, allows online verification of a person’s Income Tax Returns by using either Aadhaar number, internet banking, ATM or email, thereby ending the practice of sending paper acknowledgement to its office in Bengaluru. “Due date for filing Income Tax return extended till 7th september, 2015”, the finance ministry said in a tweet.

The government had received various representations that tax payers had faced difficulties in e-filing of returns across the country due to slowing down of certain e-services on August 31 this year.

The Income Tax department in June notified the new set of ITR forms, including a three-page simplified one, for taxpayers to file their returns for assessment year 2015-16. Earlier the date was August 31. By filing ITR, you are registering your proof of income with the income tax department and thereby authenticating it. Download the tax credit statement of Form 26AS in order to know the tax deducted at source (TDS) from your income.

In view of the extreme criticism, the government went ahead and dropped the earlier I-T forms.

The tax payers base in India is just about 4 crore out of a total population of almost 130 crore.
