The Los Angeles Police Department has added a Tesla to its fleet.
The police department, along with fire, general services, and water and power, will lease a total of 160 electric vehicles. Los Angeles hopes that it will have almost 300 new electric and hybrid vehicles in the fleet soon.
No word was given on what type of electric and plug-in vehicles would be leased, however the LAPD is said to receive 100 of the EVs, which will be used by detectives, investigators, and administrative employees.
In Australia, meanwhile, the New South Wales police department is getting a fancy vehicle upgrade, at least temporarily. LAPD’s technical experts will also be testing an on-loan Tesla Model S P85D (pictured) and BMW i for future sustainability.
The department’s purchase comes on the heels of an ambitious citywide environmental plan released earlier this year.
As promised by Garcetti in last year’s Sustainable City pLAn, these leases will ensure that 50 percent of annual light-duty vehicle purchases are EVs by 2017.
The vehicle will also cover 81 miles per charge or 150 miles per charge, based on the model of the electric-powered auto, according to the Daily Mail UK. In addition, Department of Water and Power and General Services will lease an additional 128 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, Garcetti said.
Garcetti says the new vehicles will make Los Angeles home to the largest city-owned fleet of pure battery electric cars in the country. But with gas prices low and lower-range electric vehicles out of favour, the clean cars been a tough sell with consumers.
Mr. Beck, the police chief, said the department’s purchase will both save the city money – cutting the operating costs for police vehicles by 41 percent, to 21 cents a mile – and provide an example for other cities about the many uses for electric cars.
“Today, we take another step toward becoming the most sustainable city in America”, said Garcetti in prepared remarks.
