Cirque du Soleil Heads to Broadway

The rumors from March this year were true and Cirque du Soleil is set to move into the Lyric Theatre, which will soon be vacated by On the Town . Cirque du Soleil’s shows pose physical challenges to its circus-style performers; in 2013, the company had its first death when performer Sarah Guillot-Guyard fell 94 feet during a performance of “Ká”.

Cirque du Soleil announced Wednesday that Paramour, its first production created specifically for Broadway, will première on the Great White Way in the spring of 2016.

The Quebec-based company’s theatrical division says its show “Paramour” is being created specifically for the Lyric Theatre, where it will start previews in April 2016.

Set in Golden Age Hollywood, the story will revolve around a “beautiful young poet forced to choose between love and art”, according to the company.

The theater was formerly the home of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark”, when the venue was known as the Foxwoods Theatre.

Paramour will blend the Cirque’s typically grand production and acrobatics aesthetic with “a book-driven love story narrative, live musicians and professional actors in lead roles”.

Tickets for “Paramour” are now on sale via Ticketmaster.

Music for “Paramour” is being written by the team known as “Bob & Bill” – real names, Guy Dubuc and Marc Lessard.

The troupe is also working with NBC on a TV production of The Wiz, which has a goal of opening on Broadway during the 2016-2017 season.

With tourism, both domestic and global, playing an increasingly important part in Broadway economics, New York does seem to represent a potential untapped market for Cirque, which earlier this year sold a majority stake to TPG Capital and Bosun. “Banana Shpeel” flopped when it was produced in 2010 at the Beacon Theatre on the Upper West Side.
