Radio X will play rock and guitar-based music, with regular artists on the playlist including Florence And The Machine, Mumford And Sons, Blur and Arctic Monkeys.
The relaunch will mark the demise of Xfm, 23 years after it was launched as an alternative music station.
Asked why he’s chosen to return to breakfast radio, he explained: “Because I think it’s time”.
“When you’re at the very top, your options are limited – and I’m an acquired taste”.
“I want to double the audience that exists on that show now…”
He’s also poached Radio 1 producer Pippa Taylor, who’s previously worked alongside Grimmy, to produce his new show.
He was the longest serving breakfast show host in history, beating previous record holder Tony Blackburn in 2009, and fans of the lard-loving Leeds Lad were crestfallen at his departure.
“They have a couple of features that are actually quite similar to what we did.”
Cocker will present his last 6am to 10am show on Friday, September 11, after five and a half years waking Manchester up with rock and indie anthems. Former Big Breakfast and Capital FM presenter Johnny Vaughan will host the drivetime slot, and Ricky Wilson from the Kaiser Chiefs and The Voice will present at weekends. “I’ve said I’ll get figures up and make them money if they let us get on with it”.
Rumours about the new station’s lineup have been flying around all summer, but this morning Moyles was confirmed as “Radio X’s” new breakfast show host.
“There is a real buzz around the station because we know that this is going to be a lot of fun…”
Chris Moyles has joked he could possibly be the “saviour of digital radio” as he prepares to return to the airwaves.
“Along with Vernon Kay, Johnny Vaughan and Ricky Wilson, the United Kingdom has never had a radio station like Radio X before”.
