David Goffin defeated Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 to draw Belgium level with Argentina at 2-2 in their Davis Cup semifinal on Sunday.
“I think whoever won the doubles was the (Davis Cup) victor “, said Tomic, reflecting on Saturday s doubles rubber win by Andy Murray and brother Jamie over Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth which gave the home side a 2-1 lead in the tie.
The victory propels Belgium into the Davis Cup Final for the first time since 1904.
Australia and Argentina rallied to level their Davis Cup semi-finals on Friday while superstars Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were trying to keep their countries afloat.
The 15th-ranked Goffin, who has a 9-3 record in Davis Cup, takes on No. 65 Delbonis on hard court at the Forest National in Brussels on Friday before Steve Darcis and Leonardo Mayer square off in the second match.
The Belgian battled back in the third after losing the first game to lead 5-1 only to falter as Mayer clawed his way back to 5-4 before Darcis clinched the set 6-4.
They broke for a 2-1 lead in the second set but Darcis and Bemelmans came back from 5-2 to force a tiebreak in which Mayer and Berlocq won six points in a row to tighten their grip on the match.
Switzerland, winners past year , were beaten by Belgium in the opening round in March when neither Federer nor Stan Wawrinka lined up for the Swiss.
“Always when I was break up he was playing so good and was really aggressive so it was always tough to finish the sets but in the end I’m really happy with the way I won today”.
“We’re still in it and we will be here on Sunday”, said Darcis. He is number 15 in the world, he is playing in his town.
This year, with Juan Martin del Potro out due to injury and its former Davis Cup hero David Nalbandian long retired, the team has mounted an improbable run.
Argentina are also looking for a first victory in the competition, having finished runner-up four times.
Argentina were 2-1 up heading into Sunday’s singles matches.
“It was a very shut match that was determined by little issues”, Delbonis stated in the publish-match press convention.
Adam Pavlasek and Radek Stepanek had defeated favourites Rohan Bopanna and Leander Paes 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday to hand the Czechs an advantage heading into the final day.
Spain, meanwhile, completed a 5-0 win over Denmark to remain in Group I next year.
