Given the seismic rise of online video across the board, it is inevitable that some creators are expanding onto other platforms like Facebook, Snapchat and Vessel, Wojcicki said.
One of those: how does YouTube feel about creators moving to other platforms? That tells you a lot about the YouTube audience, and shows you the growth potential here.
Following the VidCon keynote address by Susan Wojcicki earlier this evening, the YouTube CEO took a couple of minutes to sit with BroadbandTV CEO Shahrzad Rafati in a fireside chat and answer questions submitted by the community to social networks including Twitter and Instagram.
The first move in this direction was made on Wednesday when YouTube announced the publication of the first 360-degree ad. The commercial spot advertised for the famous beer Bud Light.
“That’s what we have for today”, she said.
The technology is compatible with YouTube HTML5 Rich Media Mastheads and now TrueView in-stream and in-display units, but content creators will need a 360 degree camera from manufacturers like Ricoh Theta, Kodak SP360, Giroptic 360cam, or IC Real Tech Allie. Viewers are spending 60% more time watching videos. “That’s what we have for today”, she said.
– The top 100 channels in Google Preferred saw an over 70% increase in revenue over last year versus regular partners, which had a 50% rise.
Giving her second keynote at the annual conference of online video platforms and creators after debuting here last year with a plethora of new features, Wojcicki said the redesigned app will “include a simple way for fans to opt in to all notifications from favorite creator’s channels”, which got a whoop from the crowd of creators gathered at the Anaheim Convention Center. The new locations for YouTube Spaces that are going to open will be in Mumbai and Toronto.
“We’ve seen big name artists like Avicii and Bjork do some breakthrough things with 3-D video”, Wojcicki said.
Wojcicki began by acknowledging those fans, and the industry attendees responded with plenty of enthusiasm of their own as she talked about the reinvention of television and the belief that “video created by anyone should be viewable by everyone”.
Under the new design, the new app looks slicker and has loads of features that are supposed to make it easier to edit and upload videos to the site.
