World’s largest hard drive, 16-terabyte — Samsung

Although normal mechanical hard drives of up to 10 TB (Seagate and Western Digital) capacities are available in the market, SSDs are way more expensive than them are available up to 1TB only. Samsung used 48 TLC layers and 256 Gbit per die in order to manufacture the 16TB hard drive. However, it is being speculated that the expected cost of the massive hard drive will be around $7500.

There are hard drives. This represents twice the capacity of 128Gbit NAND dies like that of the past year.

For example, they have just announced a new 16 TB flash hard drive at this week’s Flash Memory Summit.

About Samsung’s 16TB hard drive, Ars Technica’s Sebastian Anthony said in the report that the “secret sauce” behind the hard drive is Samsung’s new 256Gbit (32GB) NAND flash die. This is based on the company’s pitching of a reference design for a server with 48 of these solid state hard drives installed, which makes a total capacity of 768TB.

The PM1633a is a 2.5-inch solid state drive and packs in it 15.36 TB of storage. There’s no official announcement about 16TB PM1633a SSD from Samsung yet.

Like most computer chips, historically NAND flash has been planar, meaning that the functional structures on the chip are laid down on a single two-dimensional plane. The feat was achieved by a new technology called 3D V-NAND.

Samsung, the only company capable of mass-producing 3D V-NAND, is expanding its influence in the next-gen storage device market by leading the dominance of SSDs. But thanks to an advance in NAND flash-making technology, the storage capacity of SSDs has increased rapidly. In Samsung’s V-NAND, the “V” refers to the vertical nature of these cells.

The year before, the die was 36 layers and the year before that the die had 24 layers.
