The couple cut open the pig, drained most of the blood and were startled to see fluorescent blue fat peeking out of the incision. The post quickly garnered over 1.2 million views and over 5,000 comments, sparking plenty of conversation on social media.
From the outside, it looked like your average dead wild pig.
GlendilTEK states on Imgur that the pig was shot on a ranch in Morgan Hill, California.
There is a suspicious series of images going around that claim a family on a ranch in Morgan Hill, CA (the southernmost portion of Silicon Valley) shot and killed a wild pig only to find out it was bright blue on the inside.
GlendilTEK adds that everything but the color of the pig’s fat was normal.
While it may not be immediately correlated, there’s a fair amount of documentation on Porcine Reproductive & Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), which is a virus in pigs also referred to as “Blue Ear Disease”. The pig showed no outward signs of health issues, reported AOL.
They also explained that a common cause of the blue tinted fat is copper poisoning, but the ranch sits on top of a mercury mine whose shafts have all been filled in. Other pigs the couple shot on their property were normal, and therefore eaten.
The Reddit user who found the pig reportedly took a few samples of the blue fat to the University of California Davis in an attempt to solve the mystery. “We recommend not eating the animal, and you should try to dispose of it so it doesn’t get back into the environment”.
