White House sets up Twitter account to promote Iran deal

The White House took to the Twittersphere on Tuesday with an account to defend the landmark Iran nuclear agreement.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest stated the Twitter account can be used as an advocacy device, and in addition a way to inform the general public concerning the settlement. “The American people expect their representatives to review this potential agreement and stop Iran’s push for a nuclear weapon, and we will continue our critical work to do just that”.

The nuclear deal with Iran is awaiting approval from the Congress, which in turn is not very enthusiastic about the deal.

The account encompasses a photograph of the deal’s main negotiators, together with US Secretary of State John Kerry and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Congress has 60 days to review the agreement, which has attracted heavy opposition from Republican legislators.

President Barack Obama and his opponents are stepping beyond traditional speeches and policy statements as US lawmakers weigh whether to approve an accord that the administration says will cut off Iran’s path to a nuclear bomb and critics say amounts to appeasement of a risky adversary.

The White House also set up an online resource page at Whitehouse.gov/irandeal offering facts, graphics and videos.
