Realistically, there aren’t too many people who got close enough to see the Pope or the president. If he seemed like a pontiff in a hurry, it was for good reason. As the hundreds of journalist stood on a hill across the street from the church (they dubbed it the “Pope Slope”) to get photos of the pontiff coming and going, someone was breaking windows on all the news vehicles parked a half mile away and stealing cameras, tripods and lights left behind. I was crushed. Like every other Catholic, I waited anxiously for news of his replacement.

Despite his many warm interactions with gay people, Francis has already shown clear disconnects with reality in his preparations for this trip.

“Personally, I think if you think of the quality of life that has been delivered to millions of people around the world and freedoms that we find for people around the world, most of it has happened because of innovation due to capitalism, and because the United States of America exists”, Rounds said.

Alexandra Greeley, of Virginia, joined the Church in 2008.

Last January, on the way back from the Philippines, Pope Francis stunned her when he came to the back of the plane where journalists sit and presented her with a birthday cake.

It is not just those on the conservative right who differ with Pope Francis.

The pope will stop in D.C. before traveling to New York and Philadelphia.

Like Bradford, however, he said he was distrustful of the secular media’s portrayal of the pope as a radical change agent.

President Obama’s senior advisor Valerie Jarrett says that negative publicity surrounding the Vatican’s unease with some of the guests expected at a White House welcoming ceremony has not soured the excitement of Pope Francis’ first visit to the United States. President Ronald Reagan had trouble keeping his eyes open on his first visit to the Vatican in 1982. The pontiff responded by reading a statement about his “grave concern” over events in Iraq, where the U.S.-led war had been going on for just over a year.
