The video is set in a small town bar with a moving disco ball that features Kacey and Willie lonely at the bar drinking. They recorded a cute little behing-the-scenes clip, too, just in case your heartstrings needed tugging.

That’s exactly what happened when Kacey Musgraves teamed up with legendary Willie Nelson for the track “Are You Sure”. The two Southern songbirds bridge the generational gap easily, as his whiskery burr slides over the words and Musgraves’s honeyed tones dip low down into a wistful lament. Reborn as a duet between Musgraves and Nelson, the song’s new version was dreamt up during a backstage hang on Nelson’s tour bus in 2014.

“Look around you/ and take a good look at all the local used-to-bes/ are you sure this is where you want to be?”

“This is the one she wanted to do”, Nelson says. The song moves slowly in the way all great country ballads of the 1960s and 1970s do, and Musgraves’ band are dressed to fit the part, performing on the bar’s stage in the background. “It’s one of those obscure songs of mine that I wrote many years ago in Nashville”.

Now tucked into a hidden corner of Pageant Material, “Are You Sure” was meant to be a reward for those who made it all the way through the album.

“Are You Sure” is really quite a heart breaking song about a love lost to the devices of alcohol, but it’s still sweet to see two Texas musicians, generations apart united for four minutes of western twang. Making a cameo appearance is Nelson’s beat-to-hell guitar, Trigger, whose solos help draw a line between Musgraves’ cover and the 1965 original.
