Back in 1991, when Sega was helping Energizer and Duracell achieve record profits, probably, the company released Waku Waku Sonic Patrol vehicle , a Japanese arcade game targeted at children. Sonic patrols the streets in a police auto , keeping the roads safe from Dr. Eggman. Why exactly Sonic, who runs at super-sonic speeds, needs a vehicle isn’t exactly explained, but the arcade game was playable in a sweet patrol auto arcade cabinet.
Of course, you won’t be able to play the game while sitting inside of a tiny plastic vehicle in a grocery store or wherever Sega put these things, but whatever.
Enter Will Medved, an avid Sonic collector who Kotaku reports managed to track down a working version of the ride and buy it for $350.
Until now! An original arcade board has been obtained by a fan and dumped, meaning that with the next release of MAME pretty much anyone can play and…well, if not enjoy the game (it’s very much a kid’s title), then at least experience it. A few thousand dollars in shipping and additional costs later, Medved had the 770 pound game in his garage and ready for archiving (and conversion to accept American quarters).
