The analyst stated that the management will also reveal the next edition of Gear VR at the conference, and announce Oculus Rift‘s launch date.
In addition, earlier today we came across a report from Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster, who claims that Oculus and Samsung may have teamed up for the release of a new smartphone series that revolves around the VR concept.
According to a recent statement from analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray, Oculus will host an event in Hollywood between the 23rd and 25th of September called “Connect2”.
Firstly, Mr. Munster noted that Oculus will hold a developer conference in September in Los Angeles.
Last month company founder Palmer Luckey took to Reddit to try and assuage that concern, and at Gamescom Iribe further described the arrangement as a sort of second-party affair where Oculus funds external development of Rift-exclusive games through its Oculus Studios division.
On the other hand, other analysts from Wall Street believe that the Oculus will be available for pre-order in December in order to raise awareness around the time the HTC Vive hits the shelves. Oculus Rift Pre-Orders to Commence in December? Munster says that there are advantages to a stand-alone VR headset. Although the Oculus Rift will have an expensive all in cost at launch (roughly $1,300-$1,500), over the next 2-3 years we expect prices to drop to a reasonable all in cost of $700-$900. “We believe Oculus in combination with Samsung could either launch a new phone series for VR as they are rumoured to be releasing the “O Series” or, alternatively (but unlikely), it could be an all-in-one wireless VR headset”, Munster was quoted saying by Barrons.
The final reason Munster lists for why VR will boost Facebook is his “analysis of VR headcount through LinkedIn suggests Facebook is making the most aggressive investment in VR talent which increases our confidence in Facebook’s long term VR position”. As such, the analyst maintains an Overweight rating on Facebook with a $146 price target.
