Germany’s Volkswagen AG is recalling a total of 420,000 units of its vehicles in the US and another 41,300 in Canada due to a potential problem with air bags.

A huge safety recall affecting to about 613000 vehicles, Volkswagen & Mazda will have to make sweeping fixes to its fleet of vehicles to deal with concerns about steering and the failure of airbags. The NHTSA opened an investigation on the recall following nine reports of cable problems; this recall is not in any way to related to the more overarching Takata airbag issue that has involved a good number of automakers. Specifically, the vehicles included in the recall order were the Tiguan, Passat and CC from 2010 to 2014, the Jetta and Eos from 2010 to 2013, the GTI and Golf from 2011 to 2014 and the Jetta SportWagen from 2011 to 2013.

The recall was issued for eight models because debris could tamper with a cable that provides power to the front air bag, making it possible that the air bag would not deploy when needed, according to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration. The suspension issue could lead to rust over time and this can result in partial steering loss. No accidents or injuries have been reported. The company has already started contacting the effected customers. When all was said and done, Ford ended up spending 1.7 billion dollars between the recall, the repairs to the vehicles and the court settlements to injured and the families of the dead.
