A volcano has erupted in Japan’s main southern island of Kyushu on Monday sending up huge plumes of grey ash and smoke, Japan’s Meteorological Agency said.
The JMA warned of the danger of falling rocks and the emission of toxic gases due to the volcanic eruption, although no significant damage has been reported, NHK said.
Officials closed a four-kilometer-wide area around the crater and evacuated about 30 people.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency has confirmed the eruption, and issued restrictions on people approaching within 2 kilometers of the area.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the eruption sent volcanic rock, smoke and steam flying. A plume of black smoke shot over a mile into the air and could be seen 2.5 miles away from the site, Reuters added.
The 5,253-feet Mount Aso caught the eye of authorities final August when it recorded smaller ranges of eruptions and final week, Aso skilled a collection of small eruptions.
But one group from Taipei went to the scenic Shirakawa Suigen spring in Kumamoto instead and another group from Kaohsiung ventured to Kusasenri Green Park just outside the restricted zone near Mount Aso, the travel agent said.
In June, search teams returned to the peak of Mount Ontake in central Nagano prefecture for the first time in eight months to look for the bodies of six climbers still missing after an eruption that killed dozens.
There are more than 100 volcanoes in Japan, which sits on the “ring of fire”, which circles the Pacific Ocean.
