Verizon boasts new FiOS tech is 10x faster than Google Fiber

The field trial, the Telco said, validated an important service reliability feature of NG-PON2 – it simulated a fault in the central office equipment, but the ONT restored its own 10G service “in seconds” by autonomously tuning to another wavelength.

Verizon’s FiOS network is already capable of top speeds of 500 megabits per second, which lets you download an HD movie in about 15 seconds.

The trial, according to Vincent O’Byrne, director of access technology for Verizon, consisted of a new optical line terminal (OLT) installed in the Verizon central office, generating four wavelengths, or colors of light, each capable of operating at 10G/2.5G.

Reporting the completion of its testing of the new technology in optic fiber connection, Verizon said that once the maximum potential and capacity of the new ultra-high-speed Internet technology is realized, it can possibly reach up to 40-80 Gigabytes per second.

According to CNN, the new broadband service of Verizon would give customers a download speed of 10 gigabits per seconds.

Fiber-optic technology is the fastest way to transmit data over long distances, CNN Money reports.

Just last week, Google Fiber, a subsidiary of newly-formed conglomerate Alphabet, announced it would build a new fiber network in San Antonio.

Fiber optic cables, including the ones utilized by Verizon FiOS and Google Fiber send light signals over extremely thin strings of glass.

Verizon calls its technology “Next-Generation Passive Optical Network” (or NG-PON2) and the tests were carried out on its existing fibre-to-the-premises network.

Verizon says it will be issuing RFPs later this year from the relevant hardware and software vendors. And if true, then it would be 10 times faster than Google Fiber and 1000 time faster than the average home internet connection in the United States. Its target market will initially be businesses. But the FiOS of tomorrow could be as much as 20 times faster than even those blazing speeds.

In addition to sheer speed, the technology is also quite reliable.
