US Defense Secy arrives in Saudi Arabia

At a joint news conference with Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon, he noted aspects of military aid the United States already supplies to Israel and said “there is a lot more that we can do” related to co-operation.

Mr Zarif, in a speech in parliament that was broadcast on state radio, hailed the Security Council resolution as “unique” and said he expected it to be “the last resolution about Iran’s nuclear issue” – a reference to numerous past United Nations measures that imposed tough sanctions on Tehran.

“We have to look at it very carefully because they are going to have more money in the current situation”, he said.

Later, Carter said of the Netanyahu talks, “We don’t agree on everything”.

In a message mainly aimed at sceptical voices in Congress and strong resistance from Israel, European Union foreign ministers meeting in Brussels stressed that there was no better option available.

Hadi has meanwhile sought refuge in Saudi Arabia.

In Jordan, Carter also met colleagues of Muath al-Kaseasbeh, the Jordanian pilot who was kidnapped and burned alive by IS militants earlier this year.

“The enemy has to be defeated”, Carter told United States mechanics beside an American F-16 at the base. “The enemy has to be defeated…It will be, because the barbarians are always defeated by civilization, a few by the many”, Carter told his audience.

He later had a private meeting with pilots taking part in anti-IS coalition sorties.

With Congress set to consider the fate of the Iran nuclear deal, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter is on a mission to shore up another skeptical bunch – Middle East allies including Israel and Saudi Arabia.

It’s not clear whether Iranian lawmakers will discuss and vote on the deal in an open session. The US Congress is also to review and make its decision within the next two months.

Netanyahu has argued however that it is not enough to keep the Islamic republic from obtaining nuclear weapons that could be used to target Israel.

“And there’s no disagreement about the threats Israel sees every day from Iran’s destabilizing activities, from terrorists like Hezbollah and Hamas”.

It says that no sanctions relief will be implemented until the worldwide Atomic Energy Agency submits a report to the Security Council verifying that Iran has taken certain nuclear-related measures outlined in the agreement.

In New York, the Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2231 endorsing the historic deal on Iran’s nuclear programme. Second, there will be a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.

“That has not happened here for at least two decades”, said Eytan Gilboa, a political science professor at Bar Ilan University near Tel Aviv.

Cardin and Barrasso were joined by several top-ranking lawmakers on both sides of the aisle in urging a pause at the United Nations.

As China has bolstered its military, along with its fast-growing economic clout, Washington and Beijing have grappled over a range of issues, including Beijing’s increasingly assertive actions in the South China Sea, cyber espionage, human rights and trade disputes.
