US contractors killed in Afghan suicide bomb attack

A suicide auto bomb apparently targeting a foreign forces convoy killed three people in downtown Kabul Saturday, officials said, underlining the precarious security situation in the Afghan capital following a recent wave of fatal bombings.

A Taliban-claimed suicide automotive bombing concentrating on a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation convoy on June 30 on the primary freeway to the Kabul airport wounded two U.S. troopers and at the very least 24 others whereas killing two Afghan civilians.

The blast targeted a convoy belonging to NATO’s Resolute Support Mission contractors, said Colonel Brian Tribus, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation director of public affairs, by phone.

The US embassy in Kabul condemned the bombing.

The contractors who were killed worked for DynCorp worldwide, a private military contractor and security firm.

A truck packed with explosives in Shah Shaheed area of Kabul city early on Friday morning on 7th August which left at least 15 dead and dozens f others wounded.

“Also four foreign civilian workers who were in a vehicle were also killed or wounded in this attack”, Police Chief of Kabul, General Abdul Rahman Rahimi said, mentioning the death toll as it stood at the time.

While the U.S. had formally ended its operations in Afghanistan and withdrew its combat troops last December, more than 9,000 U.S. soldiers remain in the country in an advisory and counter-terrorism capacity.

Afghan government officials have dismissed the barrage of attacks as evidence of desperation among insurgents, but Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has sharply increased criticism of neighboring Pakistan over what he sees as a failure to crack down on militant groups.

No group instantly claimed duty for the assault.

Saturday’s blast blew glass blown out of the windows of the Shinozada hospital and a six-story building opposite.
