Unconscious Palestinian detainee could be force-fed by Israel

A Palestinian prisoner on a hunger strike for 60 days was placed on an artificial respirator and given fluids intravenously Friday after his lungs stopped working and he had seizures. In this sentence, he accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of having pursued, upon his election in 2009, a deliberate policy of relentlessly annexing and colonizing the Palestinian West Bank, ensuring that it will end up as part of Israel.

A lawyer for a Canadian teacher and an Indonesian teaching assistant says a court has overturned their convictions of sexually abusing three young children at an worldwide school in Jakarta.

Israel recently released another Islamic Jihad member, Khader Adnan, after a 55-day hunger strike, when doctors said his condition was life-threatening.

“Once Allan lost consciousness, medical ethics requires that his doctors act in accordance to their understanding of the patient’s will and their discretion”, the Israeli organisation Physicians for Human Rights told the Guardian, adding: “The state of Israel is responsible for his health”.

The Israeli Medical Association, however, is seeking to have the law overturned. According to Reuters, citing a spokesperson for Israel’s Ministry of Communications (MoC), meetings held between the two sides yesterday led to an agreement – pending on the Palestinians meeting Israeli conditions.

According to The Guardian, Israel’s prison service and the human rights group B’Tselem say almost 400 Palestinians are now detained indefinitely.

Mohammad Allan is an attorney from Nablus who has been held under administrative detention, without trial or known charges, since he was arrested in November.

Karni said she visited Allan in Beersheba last Saturday and was “tortured” to see his gaunt body wasting away while he refused to allow doctors to touch him, even to replace the adhesive securing his intravenous tube.

Mr Allan was moved to Barzilai hospital from another hospital in southern Israel earlier this week and doctors at both hospitals have so far honoured his wish not to be treated.

His father, Naser Allan, said his son was expecting to be released June 6 and was “crushed” when his detention was extended for an additional six months.

Amani Zaqout from Gaza expressed happiness, but wondered “why do we keep silent on our rights the whole time?” in indication to the right of movement in one’s own land.

“Doctors have a very clear ethical conscience”, Karni said.

Hospital spokeswoman Ayelet Kedar said Thursday that doctors did not intervene because Allan was not yet in life-threatening condition. “Now he is in hands of his God and all what we can do is praying to God to protect his life”.
