Bruin head coach Jim Mora realizes this is only one game but he also understood he was watching something special. Brendel has started 41 of 42 games since 2012.

Brendel injured his foot when it was stepped on during practice last week.

Last Saturday at the Rose Bowl Rosen completed 28 out of 35 passes for 351 yards for three touchdowns with no interceptions.

Mora said Benenoch was UCLA’s player of the game against the Rebels.

Mangum, an Idaho native, served as a Mormon missionary in Chile for 22 months, delaying his college career after an Elite 11 MVP that he shared with eventual Heisman victor Jameis Winston, the top overall pick in the 2015 National Football League draft.

“We’re not necessarily playing UCLA; it’s just another team”.

“We have big receivers and his ball placement was good”, said Mora. “But Jake is so smart and he has been doing it for so long, that he is different from a guy who hadn’t played much”.

Mangum’s start, then, may be less of a surprise for that same reason – age. “He’s got a certain maturity to him, which comes from those four extra years he has in life that some of our guys don’t”, Mora said of the 22-year-old Mangum.

The 6-4, 210 pound Rosen has the size to see over defenders and he is operating behind a veteran offensive line.

UCLA was up 37-0 in the fourth quarter and decided to put backup quarterback Jerry Neuheisel and some other backups into the game to get work.

All of the news was not good news for the Bruins. “He takes a lot of pressure off the running backs”, said Perkins.

“They’re really fast, but if we can get stops on first down, then I think we’ll be in better position for third downs”, Wadsworth said. “Runs around, slings it, and they come up with it. …” But Wadsworth said BYU’s coaches have done a good job of not accentuating the matchup. “We can’t assume a play is over, ever, in the secondary”.
