Uber has said no background check system is flawless, and that its checks are just as detailed as with taxi drivers.

Uber’s petition says detractors “are attempting to end ride-sharing in Toronto by pushing city council to reject the creation of a regulatory framework that gives residents more options, creates jobs and supports innovation”. Uber officials declined requests for interviews but sent a prepared statement Monday. “But if Uber wants a fight, we will give it to them”. But the drivers’ victory over the company suggested that enough of them refused to drive for Uber to feel an impact.

One of the smart things about Uber (and Lyft, for that matter) is that the ratings system goes both ways. UberBlack, which has a minimum fare of $25, acts as an on-call limo service with luxury cars and high-end SUVs.
