U2 welcomes Bill and Hillary Clinton and Bruce Springsteen at Madison Square

The Dublin rockers are at the tail end of their North American tour, playing the last of their 8-night-stand at Madison Square Garden tonight.

The evening was special for fans of the Irish band, who were treated to a performance of “Trash, Trampoline and the Party Girl”, which was prominently featured on the group’s live album, Under a Blood Red Sky.

The crowd had cheered before the show as the Clintons took their seats in the front row of the Garden’s upper deck. “The chairman, the Boss”. Paul Simon duetted with Bono on “Mother and Child Reunion” and the band also paid tribute to the late Lou Reed, who’s widow Laurie Anderson was in the audience, by covering “Satellite of Love“. Last year, Springsteen sang it in Times Square with the band when he subbed in for an injured Bono. Bono said as Springsteen walked off. “The kid’s a star!”

Bono earlier hinted at the rock and roll summit to come when he inserted a few lines from Bruce Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart” into the U2 song “Beautiful Day”.

“And so is Engine 44, the firefighters that picked me up off the ground”, he said.

His other rescuer had some slightly barbed words, however, making the interesting choice of insulting New York City in the middle of a stadium full of New Yorkers. Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton were observed clapping, but not singing, along. When Springsteen appeared, the couple got on their feet and enthusiastically clapped along.
