According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the wind on Ishigakijima Island reached a maximum gust of 158.8 mph, or 71 meters per second, on Sunday, breaking the site’s all-time record of 157 miles per hour, which was set in 1977.

According to PAGASA weather forecaster Jori Loiz, the typhoon continues to move north-northeast and paced up from 13 kilometer per hour to 17 kph.

More than a dozen other people in the mountainous region were killed by landslides, surging waters and a falling tree, the civil defence office in Manila added.

Within the hard-hit mountain province of Benguet, landslides killed at the very least 12 individuals, together with 4 gold miners who have been pulled out of an enormous mudslide that buried three work camps in far-flung Taneg village in Mankayan city.

Benguet Governor Nestor Fongwan said days of pounding rain and a swollen creek saturated a mountain slope, which cascaded down the gold-mining area at dawn Saturday.

Several flights and ferry trips have been cancelled.

While the shot of Goni making landfall in Taiwan has lessened, the hurricane will convey overwhelming downpours to the majority of the island Saturday and Sunday, with rugged regions in eastern Hualien and Yilan provinces anticipated that would see exuberant storms.

“Please pay attention to maintaining facilities in areas in Jeju Island, North and South Gyeongsang Provinces and as well as Gangwon Province where the course of Typhoon Goni is near”, said a KMA official.

Taiwan has evacuated people from outlying islands and troops are on standby for disaster relief.

Overall, there were two cancellations and five delays for flights to Okinawa due to Typhoon Goni, an Airport Authority spokeswoman said.

“We expect it to start weakening as it approaches Japan – the worst weather will be affecting Japan and Korea [today] and Wednesday”, he said.
