Twitter seeks traffic boost with Google tie-up

The deal is merely an extension of the partnership that began in May this year when Google started including tweets in mobile search results.

There was no formal announcement as the companies broke away from tradition by announcing the deal through a series of cute tweets between them. “And it’s another way for organizations and people on Twitter to reach a global audience at the most relevant moments”.

Google said the relevancy and ranking behind these Twitter results will continue to evolve and improve as the process matures. The new agreement could help Twitter boost engagement from its users. In addition, current Twitter users will benefit greatly by having the Google search platform increase their follower base. Ardan Arac, senior product manager of Google, said in a blog-post in May, “It’s a great way to get real-time info when something is happening”.

Bing also has been displaying tweets since summer 2014, and this deal with Google, however, could be instrumental in Twitter’s future. I’ve used the Google tweet search feature on mobile to cut through the noise on Twitter’s app. Now when I’m Googling a breaking story or event on my PC, relevant tweets could rise to the top of the search page. In an update on Friday, August 21, Arac declared that the two companies have extended their deal to desktop. However, searching for more general topics such as “Microsoft Twitter” will deliver both tweets from the official Microsoft account as well as the tweets from other users who are talking about Microsoft.
