Add disgusting reviews to competition and it is not looking good for the failed heroes, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation is on its second weekend today and, unlike Fantastic Four, has been praised by critics. “And it would’ve received great reviews”, Trank tweeted of the 20th Century Fox and Marvel team-up.
As always with Twitter, his deleted tweet was captured by followers and will live online forever.
Trank didn’t reveal exactly what put the kibosh on his version of Fantastic Four, but it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to assume his ire was directed at Fox.
Franklin Storm (Reg E. Cathey) supervises the project, whose participants include his children Sue (Kate Mara) and Johnny (Jordan, reteaming with “Chronicle” director Josh Trank), as well as Victor von Doom (Toby Kebbell). A sequel has already been dated for 2017, although it remains to be seen if it will come to fruition. Fantastic Four’s verdict looks to be a universal one for the critics.
However, “Fantastic Four” has a staggering 87 negative reviews and only a 9% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
While this is a rumour, of course, Trank was also booted out of the director’s chair for a planned Star Wars spin-off movie earlier this year.
And if that doesn’t make you think twice about spending your hard-earned $15 to buy a ticket to see this in theaters, maybe the words of its director will.
“I would like to say it took hours and hours and hours of work, and it was really complicated and really added to my craft and made me a better actor”, he said.
The Guardian’s Henry Barnes described Trank’s film as a “dawdling indie drama, gussied up in superhero garb”, while others have been even less kind.
“‘Fantastic Four’ feels like a 100-minute trailer for a movie that never happens”, writes The Hollywood Reporter.
