However, National Central University Department of Atmospheric Sciences professor Daniel Wu (吳德榮) said the nation should carefully monitor the atmospheric systems on Guam’s east coast, as a tropical storm could form in that area.

NASA’s Terra satellite passed over the Northwestern Pacific Ocean early on September 8 and captured an image of newborn Tropical Storm Etau approaching Japan. There’s a vast spread among dynamic solutions, regarding the timing of Kilo’s forecast turn west. It could venture closer to Wake; it could continue west toward Japan; it’s anybody’s guess at the moment.

Last month, powerful typhoon Goni hit the southernmost main island of Kyushu, leaving at least one person missing who was later found dead, more than 70 others injured and disrupting rail and flight services. During this weekend, Kilo is expected to curve to the east of Japan due to which its impact will be minimal.

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) yesterday announced the formation of Tropical Storm Etau, adding that it was moving toward Japan and was not expected to affect Taiwan. As the Etau moves just north of Kyoto, vertical wind shear is forecast to increase and cooler sea surface temperatures in the Sea of Japan will lead to its dissipation.

As the moisture closes in on Japan heavy spells of rain will be observed in different parts of the country on Thursday.
