ATHENS, Greece (AP) – Disasters at sea claimed the lives of dozens of migrants on Sunday, as desperate people fleeing war and poverty braved the risky journey to seek sanctuary in Europe.
Scuffles broke out in Tovarnik on Sunday when hundreds of people surged toward a train they hoped would take them to Austria.
European Union member Hungary has emerged this year as a frontline state in Europe’s migrant crisis, with 225,000 travelling up from Greece through the western Balkans and entering the country from Serbia and most recently Croatia.
The crossing was the site of clashes last Wednesday between baton-wielding Hungarian riot police and migrants and the reopening follows negotiations with Pinter’s Serbian counterpart, Nebojsa Stefanovic.

In its own adverts in Lebanese papers earlier this month, Denmark warned that it had tightened its own regulations concerning refugees.
Their transfer came just hours after Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic said that – with the inflow into his country topping 13,000 in little more than two days – matters were out of control and that his government could no longer register or accommodate the new arrivals.

The minister also boarded buses lined up outside the camp to tell passengers that they would be given food and refreshments, and then transported swiftly to Hungary.

Buses and trains took many on to emergency accommodation elsewhere, and others took taxis, a Reuters witness said.
EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn said the bloc was earmarking aid of “up to one billion euros” ($1.57 billion) to encourage Syrian refugees in Turkey to stay there, while Austria and Germany issued a joint call for United Nations countries to contribute an extra five billion euros to help refugees living in camps in Lebanon and Jordan.
