The new story will reportedly find Mary returning to the Banks family in Depression-era London, at least once a scriptwriter has been hired to work out the bits between the songs.
The movie will be based, at least in part, on P.L. Travers’ book series.
The new film will take inspiration from all eight volumes written by Travers, including Mary Poppins Comes Back, Mary Poppins in the Park and Mary Poppins in the Kitchen.
Hairspray and Smash composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will be responsible for the music in latest instalment.
Variety confirms that Disney has already started production on the classic film, having teamed up with legendary Rob Marshall.
We do wish whoever has to step-in for Julie Andrews the absolute best, considering that she was (after all) practically ideal in every way. The original “Mary Poppins” was, too – but that was half a century ago. David Magee, who wrote the screenplay for Finding Neverland and Life of Pi, has also signed on.
While it’s a big guessing game as to who will fill the very big shoes left by Andrews, the star of the 1964 screen classic, some things are known about the new film. Earlier, the Inquisitr reported that the live action film, which starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, is now being remade.
John DeLuca and Marc Platt, who worked with Marshall on “Woods“, are also producing the new movie.
The original film’s creation was the central focus of Disney’s 2013 drama Saving Mr Banks starring Emma Thompson as Travers and Tom Hanks as Walt Disney.
The Mary Poppins sequel is sure to be viewed as a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious move by some fans, even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious to others.
