The capsule, which measures around 20 feet tall by 12 feet across, is designed to “comfortably” carry up to seven astronauts per journey, making it considerably roomier than the Crew Dragon spacecraft, which is set to send astronauts to the worldwide Space Station (ISS) in 2017. The company is developing the ship for NASA as part of the space agency’s Commercial Crew Program, which aims to bring “cost-effective access” to the ISS, as well as pave the way to develop ships for manned missions to Mars in the 2030s. The seats-which don’t look especially plush-are made from high-grade carbon fiber and Alcantara cloth.

Crew Dragon was created to be an enjoyable ride.

Instead of a massive control board, the Crew Dragon has a simple flat screen display panel with a minimum of hard controls.

But with the white and black interior and the clean lines, the imagery is reminiscent of the interior of the spacecraft in “2001: A Space Odyssey”.

The private space firm has also released some new pics of the crew capsule. It was later determined an in-flight failure of a critical support strut inside the second stage liquid oxygen tank holding a high pressure helium tank in the Falcon 9 rocket was the likely cause of the accident.

The Crew Dragon capsule has an escape system that ejects them at the same G-force as a rollercoaster.

Real-time information on the capsule’s position and destination comes via a bank of monitors, which also keep the crew informed of on-board environmental conditions. Though the Crew Dragon will be largely autonomous, astronauts in the spacecraft will still have the ability to control it.
