Perhaps, he was emulating one of his scenes in director Luca Guadagnino’s new drama about a famous rock star and a filmmaker (Tilda Swinton and Matthias Schoenaerts), who have their holiday interrupted by an old friend and his daughter (Ralph Fiennes and Dakota Johnson). But while the major arc is the same, and certain details lifted wholesale, the story has been updated, and not just by giving Penelope her Beats by Dre headphones or mentioning, with uncomfortable topicality, the current refugee crisis. “It was a moment in my life when I really didn’t want to say anything, even less than I do now, but I sort of figured [it] out against wanting to be with Luca in pretty much any circumstances, wanting to go to Pantelleria and wanting to play with these extraordinary performers”, Swinton said.
The 72nd Venice Film Festival has kicked off, and the Floating City is packed with film stars, including Johnny Depp, Kristen Stewart and Ralph Fiennes.
The film is a remake of the 1969 French film “La Piscine” (The Swimming Pool), in which “a vicious love quartet was played out on the Cote d’Azur”, writes Reuters.
Swinton said she wanted to change the terms of the discussion to avoid the word “migrants”.
“I want to work with people that I have a connection with”, he admitted.
Reactions have been hard to read. The film received a smattering of boos at a festival press screening Sunday. There was some applause at the suggestion.
We’re not sure why but we like it.
Undeniably crowd-pleasing, however, was Fiennes’ portrayal of Harry. He’s hoping to get Marianne back and also walks a line of affection and devilishness towards Paul whom he initially introduced to Marianne when their affair was ending.
Fiennes said the script said simply that his character “gets up and dances and expresses himself completely through dancing”. And throughout her set, the audience watched her energetically perform “Say My Name” and “Jumpin’ Jumpin'” and dance slickly to lyrics from “Independent Women Part I”.
A Bigger Splash is released nationwide on 12th February 2016.
