Grant, who was a fourth round selection by the Steelers back in May, is a slightly surprising cut as he was vying for a cornerback spot in his rookie season.
Chickillo and Grant were two of the seven Steelers 2015 draft picks to make the initial roster.
Joining the 53-man roster for the Steelers are running back Jordan Todman and defensive end Caushaud Lyons. He gives the Steelers backfield needed depth heading in to the first two weeks of the season with LeVeon Bell being suspended.
Ten players were signed to the team’s practice squad.
“We’re trying to find the best combination of guys that are going to help us win this week”, said coach Mike Tomlin.
Additionally, the Steelers signed 10 players to the practice squad on Sunday: safety Jordan Dangerfield, defensive end Ethan Hemer, linebackers L.J. Fort and Shayon Green, center Reese Dismukes, guard Antonio Johnson, wide receivers Shakim Phillips and Jarrod West, running back Dominique Brown and tight end Harold Spears. A Gene Upshaw Award finalist, Lyons was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Buccaneers earlier this season.
This is not to say the Steelers do nothing but make bad decisions with their draft picks.
Other teams Todman has spent time with include the Minnesota Vikings in 2012 and the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2012-14. Only twenty six of those players are on the current roster today.
This year’s group of rookies looked as if they were going to buck the trend that has been a constant in Pittsburgh with only Gerod Holliman being released by the team on Saturday. The Steelers must take care of their future on the field….and it has to be sooner rather than later.
