The French Open champion didn’t take control until he broke Coric’s serve in the sixth game of the third set and then held for a 5-2 lead.
Controversial tennis star Nick Kyrgios has hit back at Swiss player Stan Wawrinka over his remark that the 20-year-old had not apologized for his on court sledge, saying that he had immediately apologized both privately as well as publically after the match.
Though Kyrgios later apologised via Twitter for his comments, he was slapped with two separate fines by the ATP who also raised the possibility the Australian could be suspended.
“I have been reading reports that I did not apologise for my comments, which is untrue”, he said in a statement posted on Facebook. “I had a lot of support in the locker room, that’s for sure”. Wawrinka produced 40 winners and 52 unforced errors as he moved into the third round against another Croatian, Ivo Karlovic. “It’s been some tough days for some people, and it’s always hard to completely focus on the tennis court”.
Wawrinka, who is divorcing his wife of six years, insisted however that the ugly controversy would not derail his preparations for the US Open.
Vekic, 19, was the player Kyrgios was referring to when he jibed at his Swiss opponent Stan Wawrinka in a match last week in Montreal that another Australian player, Thanasi Kokkinakis had “b**ged your girlfriend”.
“I’m really happy to get the win”, said Wawrinka. I know how I deal with everything. “Today, I’m happy with the way I was fighting, even if I was playing bad tennis. That’s the most important”.
Top seed Djokovic cruised through his opener against Benoit Paire, beating the Frenchman 7-5 6-2 to set up a third-round clash with Belgian 13th seed David Goffin.
The Serb has played and lost four finalist here without winning a set it is the only Masters 1000 title he has not won. In the women’s second round, Italian Karin Knapp beat Russian hopeful Daria Gavrilova 6-4, 6-1 while former number one Jelena Jankovic left American Madison Keys a tearful wreck during and after a 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 second-round win.
However, the Briton recovered to beat Grigor Dimitrov 4-6, 7-6, (7-3), 7-5 in a little under three hours after twice looking to be headed for defeat.
